The Jean Prentice Laboratory


Our laboratory is bespoke and was designed by the managing director. It is located in the same building as our head offices for reduced turnaround times. The P401 course and exams are also held here.


All of the analytical services provided by ABP Associates Ltd are accredited by UKAS. Bulk materials, aggregates and soils are all analysed at our in-house laboratory. We also provide analysts to visit site to carry out air testing.


We are very proud of our laboratory. We participate fully in quality control schemes to ensure we are continuing to give our clients the best possible service.




External Quality Control


Sample Analysis – AIMS

AIMS is a proficiency testing scheme which ensures laboratories are competent to perform analysis of bulk samples. There are three rounds every year, with four samples each. Competency is judged using a points system where the lower the score the better. “Satisfactory performance” is awarded to laboratories achieving a score of 39 or less over three rounds.


The laboratory at ABP Associates has been participating in the scheme since June 2009. We have shown “satisfactory performance” since the very beginning.


Fibre Counting – RICE


RICE is a proficiency testing scheme that aims to ensure all laboratories are counting slides generated from air testing at the same high standard. A grading system is in place depending on how far away from the “normal” each count is.

Currently the ABP Laboratory’s status is Catagory 1 – Good.

Soil Testing – AISS

The Asbestos in Soils Scheme is a new scheme run by the Health & Safety Laboratory. Two samples of soil are sent out per round with three rounds per year where the laboratory is expected to find any asbestos present. We are also submitting the quantity of asbestos present. Qualitative and quantitative results are scored to produce a z score for each. Currently, the ABP laboratory’s z score is classified as satisfactory for qualitative and quantitative. There is no scoring system available yet, but we are looking forward to it.
