Air Sampling and Clearance Testing of Asbestos
This proficiency module course, the P404, provides theoretical and practical knowledge in the techniques of air sampling and clearance testing of asbestos and MMMF fibres. It focusses on regulations and the analyst’s role in air sampling and clearance testing procedures.
We can also provide refresher courses for those who have had a break from air sampling and clearance testing, or would simply like an update on current guidelines and regulations (P404R).

The analysis of membrane filter samples by phase contrast microscopy is covered by module P403. In conjunction with BOHS module P403 – Asbestos Fibre Counting (PCM), this will cover the requirements of the ‘4-stage clearance procedure’.
The full BOHS syllabus is available to view here (PDF file; opens in new window).
Candidates are expected to be aware of the contents of HSG 248 (Asbestos: The Analysts Guide) and in particular Section 6 “Site assessment for reoccupation”. Candidates will also be expected to have prior experience of undertaking clearance testing including air sampling, fibre counting and issuing certificates of reoccupation.
Those taking the refresher course are expected to already hold and be able to produce their P404 certificate.
