This course aims to provide the candidate with the theoretical knowledge and practical ability to undertake safe sample handling methods and the analysis of bulk samples for the presence of asbestos using the polarised light microscopy (PLM) method.

Candidates are required to be familiar with the requirements of HSG248:Asbestos the analyst’ guide for sampling, analysis and clearance procedures (2nd edition, July 2021), Chapter 6: Site clearance and certification, as well as prior experience of undertaking clearance testing including air sampling, fibre counting and issuing of the certificate of reoccupation.
This course also has a pre-requisite that all candidates must have taken the BOHS P403 module – Air Sampling and Fibre Counting (PCM) (P403 and P404 courses with their examinations either run concurrently or as a combined course can be deemed as meeting this requirement)

This may include participation in Asbestos in Minerals Scheme (AIMs), but this is not a compulsory requirement. Candidates are also recommended to have completed the qualification P403 – Asbestos Fibre Counting (PCM), or have experience of fibre counting work within the last three years. This may include participation in the Regular Interlaboratory Counting Exchange Scheme (RICE), but this is not a compulsory requirement.

ABP’s General Asbestos Awareness course is regularly undertaken by managers and workers involved in maintenance or refurbishment work, as well as allied trades such as plumbers, electricians, carpenters, and demolition/construction workers. The course provides an introduction to asbestos found in and around buildings and workplaces, the health effects associated with asbestos exposure and safety precautions which can be implemented to mitigate the risk.

The full course lasts for two days, and content covered includes modules 1-19, chapter 4 of HSG247: The Licensed Contractors’ Guide, and other relevant legislation. Also, modules 24-27 of HSG247 are covered which concentrate on practical considerations. The refresher course provides updates to the legislation over the year and lasts for one day.

For a tight-fitting facepiece (disposable masks and half-face masks) the initial selection should include fit testing to make sure the wearer has equipment which fits correctly. Employers should have systems in place to make sure that face-fit testing is carried out and repeated as necessary on a regular basis.
The aim of this course is train you to conduct a face fit test of tight-fitting face pieces (RPE) using the bitter taste test. This will enable you to perform the test on individuals that are required to wear tight fitting, RPE as part of a risk assessment.
You will also be able to instruct the wearer in donning and doffing their RPE, pre-use checks, maintenance and fit checks.
